A LOCAL MP has welcomed the introduction of a new law to ensure further protections against terrorism.

‘Martyn’s Law’ – named after Martyn Hett who was killed alongside 21 others in the 2017 Manchester Arena attack – will require public venues to improve preparedness against attacks and bring in measures to help keep the public safe.

The bill was introduced to Parliament on September 12 and is currently undergoing scrutiny.

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley South, said: “I am pleased to welcome Martyn’s Law, which will require premises to take proportionate steps to keep the public safe at events and venues.

“Campaigners and survivors of terrorist attacks have worked tirelessly to bring this legislation forward, so that other families can be prevented from experiencing the tragedies they have.”
