BARNSLEY Metropolitan Band will represent the town and Yorkshire in the national finals of the British Brass Band Championships next weekend and will be having a dry run of their ‘test piece’ in Cudworth this Sunday.

The band, based at the Civic, has had a purple patch on the contest stage recently, qualifying for the national finals four times in the last five years.

After winning the 3rd Section Yorkshire Area Contest back in March, they will once again be heading to Cheltenham Racecourse on September 14 for the finals.

The band will give the last of their summer concerts in Cudworth Park at 3pm on Sunday and they will be including a run of the piece they will be playing at the contest, known as a ‘test piece’.

Musical director Alex Francis said: “We always have a lovely, warm reception at Cudworth Park so it’s a great opportunity to try it out on a friendly audience.

“We’re pleased with how the piece has come together – it’s called The Shipbuilders and we really like playing it.

“Hopefully the audience will enjoy it and we’ll get a solid performance under our belts while we still have another week to put the final polish on it.”
