SIX young photographers have received awards from the Barnsley Civic as they hope to help locals build up their career.

The Civic partnered with international arts company Photoworks to organise the awards that were split into three categories, with entrants ranging from the ages of 11 all the way to 30.

Out of the hundreds of applicants, three first place winners rose to the top, and a further three commended awards were granted.

Winners won prizes including an hour-long mentoring session with Photoworks experts, and the winners of the Student and Emerging Professional categories will have their work showcased online by both Photoworks and the Civic.

Jason White, creative engagement manager at Barnsley Civic, added: “We were overwhelmed by the quality of submissions this year.

“Some artists returned after submitting for the first-time last year, and a notable difference this year was the increased number of submissions from those aged 13 to 18.

“Barnsley Civic’s gallery has a reputation for hosting high-quality photography exhibitions, so it is heartwarming to see so many young people interested in pursuing photography in both commercial and artistic contexts.

“We’re grateful for Photoworks’ support on this project and their commitment to developing opportunities for young and emerging photographers in Barnsley.”
