A BBC reporter who was on the frontline during the miners’ strike is set to give a talk on how news cartoonists portrayed the events.

Nick Jones covered the 1984/1985 strike for BBC Radio and has dug into his extensive archives to explore the reporting of the time.

In an upcoming presentation for this year’s South Yorkshire Festival at Wortley Hall, he is set to discuss the portrayal of events through news cartoons, and how they depicted heroes and villains, police brutality, working class solidarity and the growing despair of communities as the strike progressed.

Nick described the cartoons as ‘equivalent to today’s postings on social media, often provocative, abusive and sometimes downright cruel, intended to prompt comment and debate’.

The event will take place on August 18 at 2pm in the Unison Room.
