BARNSLEY response officers who courageously entered freezing water to save a woman’s life have been given a prestigious award for their actions.
PCs Adam Morton and Ben Child responded to an emergency call on August 28 2023 following reports of a woman who had entered water in Barnsley, aiming to end her life.
The woman’s father had called 999, giving very brief detail and information, before the line ended as he plunged into the water to try and save his daughter.
PCs Morton and Child immediately started searching for the pair. After hearing shouts for help, the officers spotted the man holding his unconscious daughter’s head above the water, struggling to get her to safety.
Without hesitation, the officers entered the water and brought the two to safety.
Despite their own body temperatures dropping due to the cold water, the duo remained professional and calm, continuing to reassure the father that they would do all they could to save his daughter.
The officers provided first aid to the woman while waiting for South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to arrive with a suitable inflatable to get them safely for treatment from Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
Both the man and the woman were taken to Northern General Hospital for treatment and the woman was given the necessary support.
During the force’s annual awards ceremony held earlier this month PCs Morton and Child were presented a Royal Humane Society Award Honorary Testimonial on Vellum by Chief Constable Lauren Poultney. This is awarded to someone who has put themselves in considerable danger to save, or attempt to save, someone else.
The woman’s family, who wish to remain anonymous, previously thanked officers and emergency service teams for their actions and kindness.
Barnsley District Commander Chief Superintendent Simon Wanless said: “Adam and Ben are the epitome of selfless and courageous police officers.
“Their quick thinking and selfless actions to enter the water saved the life of the woman and possibly the life of her father, who had already been in the water for some time.
“To see them receive such a prestigious award is testament to their bravery and commitment to serving and protecting their communities.
“Congratulations to them both, we’re incredibly proud to have them as part of the Barnsley district and South Yorkshire Police.”
