HEALTHWATCH Barnsley is making plans to improve treatment options after inspecting the reasons behind why people are attending A&E.

The group discovered that the majority of people attending had done so because they were unable to secure a GP appointment, and thought this was the best place for treatment.

On top of this, 25 per cent of people who were spoken to had experienced the symptoms for more than a week.

These findings have been shared with Barnsley Hospital’s Urgent and Emergency Care Board, who are currently looking at redesigning the urgent care pathways.

Other providers have also been informed, who are now looking at opportunities to promote alternative services who are able to provide care, advice and guidance, which could help to reduce the number of people attending A&E.
