A LOCAL junior football club took part in a mud run where they raised more than £2,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Athersley Rec’s under 15s embarked on the challenge last Saturday, facing the rain to support the charity.

The idea was suggested by coach Richard Gomersall – but the youngsters were more than happy to take part.

Laura Kyle, whose son Mason took part, said she was impressed by all the players who joined in.

“They got absolutely wet through before it even started because of the weather,” she added.

“Mason didn’t come out with a smile on his face, but it was a great experience.

“He ran for his grandad in the past, who survived oesophagus cancer, so it’s nice for him to be able to do something with others who’ve also been affected.

“If you think that they’re all 14 to 15 years old, this is a really grown up, mature thing for them to do.

“They’re a lovely bunch of lads.”
