PUPILS at a Penistone school are raising funds to build an allotment and an outdoor reading area.
On Sunday June 9, the youngsters from St Johns J&I School are doing a sponsored 10km walk along the Trans Pennine Trail, accompanied by parents.
Their Go Fund Me appeal says: “The money we raise will go towards restoring the garden into an allotment as some of the parents have volunteered to come in once a week to teach the children how to grow fruits and vegetables as well as maintain the garden.
“The money raised will also go towards purchasing a reading chair and log seats to create the outdoor reading area, where the children can go to relax and escape to wherever their imagination takes them. Some parents have agreed to volunteer and come in each week to read to the children.
“This project is very important as the health benefits are endless. By creating these spaces it will give the children an opportunity to spend more time outside connecting with nature, do part of their learning and create additional elements to their learning.”
