A MUCH-LOVED Barnsley tipple has won a silver medal in a nationwide competition to find the country's best beers.

Acorn Brewery’s iconic Barnsley Bitter was the runner-up in the standard strength bitter category at the Society of Independent Brewers' (SIBA) national beer competition this week.

It beat off tough competition for hundreds of other beers to get to the finals and impressed no less than 100 judges to gain second place.

Dave Hughes, owner of Acorn Brewery, said: "We're very proud - we’ve brewed Barnsley Bitter since we set up the brewery in 2003 and it’s always been good."
