A BARNSLEY MP has voted to abolish the so-called bedroom tax, saying it's leaving families in Barnsley on the edge of spiralling debt.

Although the motion was defeated by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, Michael Dugher said people are being left with nowhere to go and met with constituent Karen Fletcher, who had travelled to Parliament to lobby against the bedroom tax.

Widely known as a 'tax', it's actually a cut in housing benefits for those deemed to have a spare bedroom.

Mr Dugher said: "The bedroom tax is leaving families in Barnsley with nowhere to go and on the edge of spiralling debt.

"Meeting with Mrs Fletcher was a real reminder of the true damage that this cruel tax of David Cameron's is having.

There are around 3,000 people in Barnsley affected by the bedroom tax.
