POLICE are urging motorists to only make necessary journeys with snow, ice and rain affecting South Yorkshire today.

A police spokesperson said: “With increased frost and risk of ice and snow, the likelihood of having a collision also increases. We would always advise to not travel and only travel if your journey is essential.

“If you do decide to travel make sure you allow extra time, plan your journey and you are prepared in case of a breakdown.

“No one plans to break down or get stuck waiting for repair or recovery in freezing conditions, but please don’t underestimate the danger this could pose.”

Police also issued advice to motorists who do venture out on the roads.

It is advised that drivers keep an emergency kit within their vehicle which includes a blanket, gloves, warm clothing, waterproof boots, a first aid kit, de-icer, ice scraper and a power bank to keep phones charged.

To reduce your chances of breaking down and to ensure yours and other road users safety, you should carry out winter checks before driving your vehicle.

Check all your lights are working.

Check your tyres are in good condition.

Does your heater work to clear your front windscreen?

Remove excess snow and ice from your roof and bonnet which could fall into the path of other road users.

Be extra vigilant in rainy or snowy weather, or if the road is icy. Always drive at a speed which is appropriate to the road conditions, driving in as high a gear as possible, accelerating and braking very gently. Stopping distances can be up to ten times greater in icy conditions.

“Our officers will be out across South Yorkshire today, serving their communities. Do your part and let’s help keep everyone safe.”
