PLANNING permission is being sought to build a new community hall – at the same location of a recently-demolished hall – which will support local people with learning difficulties.
An application was submitted to Barnsley Council’s planning board recently for the new site to be added to Beacon Close in Silkstone Common.
There had been a hall built on the site previously, but this was demolished following a successful planning application in 2019.
The new hall would be operated by Greenworks – a provision for adults with learning disabilities.
The organisation supports those who are working towards paid or voluntary employment.
A report states: “Our main site is located in Cawthorne in the heart of rural Barnsley.
“We have a combined workforce of 15 paid staff and volunteers – five of which have a learning difficulties – who care for up to 50 adults with learning and physical difficulties per day.
“Greenworks has strong links with the local adult social services, who have referred over 80 per cent of our trainees.
“Greenworks Plus is a subsidiary of Greenworks, which specifically works with adults who are interested in pursuing a pathway towards employment.
“We estimate that in total there will be 12 people accessing the facility at Silkstone Common per day. This includes staff, one of whom has autism.”
