HEALTHCARE workers are hoping to raise awareness of the risks of consuming alcohol during pregnancy after a study revealed that around 41 per cent of expectant mums still drink.
As part of FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) Awareness Month, Barnsley Council and the South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board are trying to raise awareness of the condition, which affects between 1.8 and 3.6 per cent of the population.
MP for Barnsley North, Dan Jarvis, is helping to promote awareness via social media and has raised the issue with the Department for Health and Social Care.
It is understood that many find it hard to quit drinking and anyone needing support is urged to speak to their midwife or GP.
