BARNSLEY residents are being invited to join the conversation and give their views and thoughts on plans for the town.

Barnsley Council is inviting residents, communities, and businesses to participate in shaping the future of the town through the Barnsley Long-Term Plan for Towns.

The Government announced in October 2023 a new Long-Term Plan for Towns which brings together community leaders, business people, and local organisations to improve Barnsley’s future.

With £20million in funding over the next ten years, the council intends to improve an area including the town centre and areas like Oakwell, the Metrodome, Barnsley Hospital, and Dearne Valley Park.

Plans will focus on improving safety and security, high streets, heritage, regeneration, and transport and connectivity.

A spokesperson said: “We want to hear and understand how you think, feel, and use the town and your vision and ambitions for Barnsley. You can contribute to this ongoing conversation by filling in our survey online or contacting us to attend a focus group. You can also collect paper copies of our survey from Library at the Lightbox.

“The findings from this conversation will be used when making decisions about future developments in and around the town centre and will support the development of the ‘Long-Term Plan for Towns’ Action Plan submission to government.”

Edward Naylor, CEO of Naylor Industries and Chair of the Barnsley Town Board said: "Your feedback is crucial to ensuring that our plans reflect the needs and aspirations of Barnsley residents. We want to understand your vision for our town and how we can make it a better place to live, work, and visit."

Coun Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council and Vice Chair of the Barnsley Town Board said: “Over the past decade, Barnsley has seen significant progress in enhancing its town centre, with improvements to public spaces, infrastructure, and community facilities.

“The journey towards a vibrant, safe, and connected town continues, and we need your views to guide our next steps.

“Town Centres don't stand still and neither must we, it is important to get your views on the next stage of our Regeneration.

Together, we can build on our achievements and create a town centre that truly reflects the spirit of Barnsley.”
