A FORMER member of the world-famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band – who played an integral part in the making of Brassed Off – has died.
Malcolm Clegg was a long-time bass player with the band and has been described as a ‘real Grimey character’ who epitomised what the band stands for.
A tribute by the band, who labelled Malcolm as a ‘Grimethorpe legend’, states: “His lasting legacy will be the integral part he played in the making of ‘Brassed Off’.
“Malc was passionate about the project and was a key driving force behind the band not only performing the soundtrack to the film at the Abbey Road Studios but also ensuring that the band members took part in the film.
“All the extras in the Grimley Colliery Band were members of Grimethorpe and the film would not have been such an important part of the band’s history without Malc.
“He will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him within the band.
“He was a true gent, a proper Yorkshireman and a great bander.”
