VOLUNTEER police cadets have been praised for their work up in Barnsley and many will help police the Olympic torch relay route.

South Yorkshire Police's volunteer cadets has signed up 15 from the town - many of whom will join police and other officials to line the route of the relay and help with the evening celebrations taking place in Sheffield. The cadets - who would have been 16 or 17 when they joined - have been involved in everything from test purchasing at pubs and clubs to helping at youth clubs.

A spokesman said: "The commitment, dedication and citizenship demonstrated by the cadets have been first class and they’ve shown themselves, and the Force, in a very positive light.”
