A NEW police custody suite will be built in Barnsley town centre.

South Yorkshire Police has got planning approval for a replacement 20-cell suite, which will be located on Churchfield.

It will part of the police's headquarters in the town, replacing the existing suite on the site.

The delivery timetable is not yet finalised but it's hoped that work will start between October 2015 and March 2016.

Paula Ibberson, custody estates project manager for South Yorkshire Police, said: "The existing suite in Barnsley is now at the end of its life with outdated facilities that are inefficient to run.

"The new environment will be safer, more cost effective and bring better conditions for those using and working in the suite."

It's anticipated that the project will deliver annual savings of £1.2 million, the majority of which will come from removing posts as staff retire.
