EXPECTED finish dates for Barnsley's new-look town centre have been announced.

New car parking is the first development that's expected to be seen in November 2015, before the new town square is finished in October 2016.

In early 2017, visitors to the town centre will see the finishing touches with a new shopping boulevard, a revamped market hall and an all-new library being created.

"The next three years are going to be exciting," said council leader Sir Steve Houghton.

"We were told loud and clear that Barnsley needs to keep its markets, to create quality open spaces that feel safe and to make sure business servicing and parking needs are met."

Barnsley College's £17 million sixth form will also be built at the former library site, on Shambles Street, by next summer.
