THE plinth in Peel Square and the 'mushroom' in Cheapside will finally be removed this summer.
Stalls in the outdoor market will move into the main precinct ready for Christmas and will remain there for at least three years.
There will be 40 fixed stalls running from Peel Square by the steps to the underground toilets, through to Queen Street, into May Day Green and Cheapside, where they will stretch as far as the WH Smith and the O2 store.
The square's plinth and the 'mushroom' seating canopy in Cheapside will be removed to make space for the stalls and allow emergency vehicles to get between them.
A council spokesman said: "We're all really excited about this new scheme. We're doing this - the council. It's not a private company, it's not dependent on this or that, it is happening.
"It's really positive for Barnsley and I can't wait to see work start."
