HOLGATE Grammar School's entire archive is now available to view in Barnsley Town Hall.

The archive of the school was transferred to Barnsley Archives and Local Studies in 2012 and since then staff have been working hard on extensive cataloguing.

Holgate Grammar School educated generations of boys - and later girls - until its closure in 2012, when it merged with the Kingstone School to form the Horizon Community College on a new site on Dodworth Road.

The origins of the school date right back to 1546 when Archbishop Holgate founded a free school at nearby Hemsworth.

From 1887 to 1912, the school was on Church Street, in the building now occupied by the Cooper Art Gallery.

Then from 1912 until 2012, the school was situated on Shaw Lane.

Cricketer Martyn Moxon, broadcaster Michael Parkinson and the late Emmerdale actor Stan Richards were amongst the famous names to have passed through the school.

The collection can be viewed by the public, along with the records of over 100 Barnsley schools, at Experience Barnsley.
