TWO people were injured after a 12-car smash on the M1 in Barnsley on Thursday morning.

Police closed two lanes of the southbound carriageway for around five hours while debris and vehicles were removed.

Firefighters from Barnsley and Tankersley stations were called to the scene and cut two trapped people from their vehicles.

The incident happened close to junction 37 of the M1 at Dodworth.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman said two casualties were taken to Barnsley Hospital, although their injuries were not serious.

"We were alerted at 7.56am and sent a rapid response vehicle, two ambulances and two hazardous area response team vehicles to the scene," she added.

"There were four patients in total, two of whom were treated at the scene but did not need hospital treatment."

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Lanes two and three of the motorway were closed for around five hours but lane one and the hard shoulder were kept open to keep the traffic flowing."
