BARNSLEY Council approved the final plans for the construction of more than 200 homes on a former colliery site in Smithies.

Originally outlined in 2018 by Gleeson Homes, the Wakefield Road project includes 221 home.

As part of the agreement, the developer will contribute £1.1m towards primary and secondary school capacity and provide 22 affordable homes.

Additional funding includes £206,500 for off-site green spaces and £109,200 for heritage assets.

Two objections were submitted by local residents, who raised concerns over potential loss of light and views from neighbouring properties, the distribution of affordable housing and possible construction disruptions.

However, councillors unanimously approved the plan.
