THE 2024 season of RampUP events across the borough will come to a close next week with a free CycleFest.

It is taking place on the concourse at Oakwell Stadium on Wednesday from 10am until 3pm.

The half-term session will include ramps, bikes and scooters as well as a technical challenge course in the RampUP Zone for children and young people to take on.

As part of the event, there will be two 'Learn to ride' sessions which must be booked in advance. The training is designed to help children take their first pedal strokes in riding independently without stabilisers, or just increasing their confidence on the bike.

Bikes and helmets can be provided but limited places are available. To register your interest in booking a place for your child, email barnsleybikeworks@barnsley.gov.uk.

In addition to the chance to ride bikes, there will also be the opportunity to a free bike safety check carried out by the Barnsley Bike Works team, who can also advise on maintenance tips and how to look after your bike.

You can also get into the Halloween spirit and decorate your bike or scooter at the Spooky Spokes stall.

With the dark nights drawing in and the clocks going back this weekend, it's important to be bright, be safe and be seen when out and about, which is why the council’s Road Safety team will also be in attendance to provide hints and tips to keep you and your family safe.

Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said: "We're proud to be able to offer a free event for our children and young people to participate in during the October half-term and we hope it will end the 2024 RampUP programme on a high note.

"It's been another fantastic year for RampUP, with more than 7,000 people taking part in one of the 300 sessions delivered across Barnsley schools, community and workplaces since April.

"Our Sport and Physical Activity and Barnsley Bike Works teams have been incredibly busy delivering these events around the borough, and I'd like to thank them for their hard work on this excellent community delivery programme which is designed to get more people cycling for leisure, school and work.

"Keeping physically active is beneficial for both your physical and mental heath, and we're continuing to invest in active travel to put it at the heart of our communities, allowing people to walk and cycle on our fantastic network of off-road routes more frequently and to help support our ambition of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Barnsley."
