A SECTION of the Dearne Valley Parkway was locked down last night after a large gathering of car enthusiasts from as far afield as Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire descended on Barnsley roads.

Some had their vehicle seized and some were given fixed penalties for a variety of offences, including illegal tyres, registration plates and exhausts.

A SYP Operational Support spokesperson said: “Saturday night saw a large gathering of car enthusiasts descend on Barnsley's roads from far and wide, including Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire.

“Some of you will have no doubt been innocent and wanted to simply meet your pals and admire each other's cars. Some of you had other ideas and seem to think that you can treat South Yorkshire's roads like a race track.

“Please be advised that this will NOT be tolerated and you will be dealt with robustly with the full force of the law, before you hurt yourself or someone else.”

South Yorkshire Police Roads Policing and Proactive officers locked down a section of the Dearne Valley Parkway and corralled the offending vehicles.

“Some had their vehicle seized, some were given fixed penalties for a variety of offences identified, including illegal tyres, registration plates, exhausts etc, ALL were warned about their conduct and manner of driving under the Police Reform Act,” the spokesperson continued.

Four quad bikes were also stung and their tyres deflated as they didn't want to stop to have their quads checked over.

“A BIG thank you to the members of the public who kept calling in to give us the heads up where the group had moved to next, you allowed us to net them effectively. Finally, sorry to the motorists who got caught up in this, we tried to release you as quickly as we could, thank you for your patience.”
