THE council is aiming for "minimum disruption" as the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race lands in the town on the same day as the Reds' final game of the season.

May 3 will see a bumper sporting day for the borough, with elite cyclists including ex-Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins racing through the town's streets.

But Barnsley Football Club fans have contacted us to voice their concerns about the road closures in place, as the Reds face Rochdale at Oakwell.

To confuse matters more it's an early kick-off, with the game starting at 12.15pm.

Council spokesman Phillip Spurr said: "We are aware that the Barnsley FC game will take place during the Tour de Yorkshire on May 3 and are currently working alongside the football club on this issue.

"A number of road closures will take place during this period, however we aim to minimise disruption as far as possible.

"Further information about road closures during this period will be announced later this week."
