A LOCAL neighbourhood police team was out and about last week carrying out speed checks to highlight the dangers of speeding.

Barnsley North NPT officers conducted the checks in Staincross and Mapplewell in response to concerns raised by residents to councillors which were discussed at the last local Police and Community Meeting team (PACT) meeting.

The officers did the checks in several locations during the day and the team has released the results.

A Barnsley North NPT spokesperson said: “Spark Lane, Mapplewell is governed by a 30 mph speed limit and we recorded 60 vehicles in total, of which the highest reading recorded at 34 mph and lowest being 18mph.

“Staincross Common/Windhill Lane is governed by 40 mph speed limit and we recorded 88 vehicles in total, of which the highest reading recorded at 40mph and lowest being 17mph.

“Paddock Road is governed by a 30mph speed limit and we recorded 72 vehicles in total, of which the highest reading recorded at 31mph and lowest being 16mph.

“Bar Lane, Staincross is governed by a 30 mph speed limit and we recorded 60 vehicles in total, of which the highest reading recorded at 38mph and lowest being 17mph.

“Speed contributes to more than half of all fatal collisions in Britain and kills or injures 137 young people every week.”
