FRIGHTENING’ fires caused by batteries in Barnsley’s bin lorries occurred three times last year, according to the council.
The local authority blamed electrical items – and in particular vapes – for sparking whilst in transit.
Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “We’ve had three incidents in Barnsley – they’re massively frightening for our collection crews, seeing flames coming out from the back of a vehicle and they have to act quickly to try and keep themselves safe and stop the fire from spreading.”
