A GOLDTHORPE firm has been handed a £19,000 bill following a hearing at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court.

UK Construction, based on Cross Street, were given liability orders for the non-payment of council tax. Three counts – for £12,761, £4,075 and £3,111 – will be recouped following a successful conviction by Barnsley Council.

Local authority bosses have also prosecuted hundreds of people for non-payment of council tax.

A hearing, at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court earlier this month, saw the council seek 941 charges. A total of 635 were fined £80, while the court was told 179 had been withdrawn and 127 had been paid prior to the hearing.

And a man who is accused of failing to pay council tax is set to appear at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court in July.

Stephen Willoughby, of Cooper Lane, Sheffield, will answer charges in relation to non-payment of tax – totalling more than £3,400 – on a property on Fir Tree, Thurgoland, on July 25.
