A LOCAL primary school has become the first in Barnsley to achieve the Asthma Friendly School Award.

The initiative aims to improve the care of pupils with asthma by raising awareness through information, training and support for school staff as well as pupils, parents and carers.

Silkstone Common Junior and Infants School became the first in Barnsley to receive the award, and were visited by the council and Barnsley Hospital earlier this month.

A spokesperson for Barnsley Council said: “Our 0-19 public health nursing service was joined by children’s respiratory nurses from Barnsley Hospital to award the school with their accreditation certificate. This award recognises the school’s commitment to supporting students with asthma and creating a safe and healthy environment for them.”
